The second session of the UMVIM Senegal Community Health Worker training was held from the 15th to the 19th of March 2010. The thirteen volunteers were chosen from the various villages within the regions of Thies and Dakar
Dr. Carol Meynen, Jane Dunn RN and Janet Ross, R.N. and their group came in January 2010 to introduce the first session of the training program which was a great success.
The second session was led by Dr Aly Bashir and Kittie Messer RN assisted by Valerie Mane and Paulette Bleck, local Senegalese nurses working with the United Methodist Mission. The students learned how to take vital signs, administer medicines, how to prevent and render assistance to people with serious injuries and how to administer intramuscular injections. Role play and interactive demonstrations were used as teaching/learning methods. The students demonstrated a good understanding of the topics. All the participants exhibited zeal and enthusiasm to go back and work for their communities. The third and final phase of the training session, which addresses child birth, genitourinary health and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases will be held from June 14th to 18th 2010.
The goal will be for the students’ to be able to help their communities by implementing prevention and early intervention programs that support a better quality of life and wellness.
